Every year, something extraordinary happens on the remote islands off Bali’s southeast coast. For one full day, the ocean becomes sacred. Boats stop. Swimming ceases. The sea rests and so does everything on it.
This is Nyepi Laut, also known as Sea Seclusion Day, a deeply respected Balinese Hindu ritual celebrated exclusively in Nusa Ceningan, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Penida.
And in 2025, it will take place on Tuesday, 7th October, offering travelers a rare chance to witness one of Bali’s most beautiful and lesser-known cultural traditions.
What Is Nyepi Laut?
Unlike Bali’s better-known Nyepi Day (Day of Silence on land), Nyepi Laut is a spiritual day of silence for the ocean, practiced by the sea-facing Hindu communities of the Nusa Islands. It honors Dewa Baruna, the God of the Sea and aims to purify the waters, restore balance, and express deep gratitude to nature.
On this day, all ocean-related activities are paused:No boats. No surfing. No diving. No swimming.Even local fishermen and tour boats rest in observance.
The entire community, including hotels and guests, respectfully follows the tradition not out of obligation, but out of reverence.
In Balinese Hindu belief, Dewa Baruna, also known as Bhatara Baruna is the divine guardian of the sea and all its mysteries. He rules over the vast, ever-moving waters and is considered both protector and purifier. To the coastal communities of the Nusa Islands, Dewa Baruna is not just a deity, but a sacred presence that sustains life, provides abundance, and demands deep respect. Nyepi Laut is held in his honor, a day when the ocean is allowed to rest, unburdened by boats, swimmers, or noise. It is a gesture of devotion, gratitude, and balance between human activity and the spiritual forces of nature. In observing his day of silence, the people believe they restore harmony with the sea and with the unseen energy that surrounds it.
